Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology

Academic Programs

Our Master of Arts (M.A.) program offers two areas of concentration. Each of these areas includes basic counseling courses to help develop your individual, group and career counseling skills. You will also be able to take your knowledge out of the classroom and apply it in the field. Our on-site clinic and community partnerships give you the opportunity to work directly with patients while under the guidance of faculty.

Research

Prepare for a research-based career in counseling, or start preparing for future doctoral work. This concentration requires 72 quarter credit hours. In addition to advanced courses in research design and statistics, you will complete a supervised practicum and a thesis. This program does not include eligibility for licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) concentration has been designed to meet the requirements for those who desire to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). This concentration requires 90 quarter credit hours. In addition to courses in counseling, assessment, diversity and social justice issues, you will complete a supervised practicum and internship. Students who complete this program and after two years of post-Master’s work in the field may apply to become a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Colorado.

Accreditation

We are accredited by the Masters in Psychology and Counseling Accreditation Council (MPCAC) for our Clinical Mental Health Concentration in the M.A. program. Additionally, the Clinical Mental Health Concentration is recognized as fulfilling program requirements for licensure in Colorado. The University of Denver has not yet determined whether the program meets licensure requirements in states other than Colorado or in any U.S. protectorates. Students seeking licensure in a state other than Colorado should contact the state’s Board of Education to determine whether the program meets licensure requirements.
