Laughing Butterfly Classroom

The Preschool Classrooms at the University of Denver’s Fisher Early Learning Center serve children ages 3 to 4 in a vibrant, play-based environment designed to nurture curiosity, confidence, and growing independence. Our educators use research-based curricula, including Creative Curriculum and Project Approach, to provide developmentally appropriate experiences that support the whole child. These approaches integrate social-emotional, physical, language, cognitive, literacy, math, science, technology, social studies, and the arts into meaningful daily learning.

Through hands-on exploration, engaging projects, and consistent routines, children build early academic foundations, strengthen problem-solving skills, and form meaningful friendships. Learning is guided by both teacher- and child-directed experiences, with project-based investigations that reflect children’s interests and individual needs. We partner closely with families to create a caring community where every child feels valued, capable, and excited to learn each day.

Classroom Teachers

Nickie Cruz, Lead Teacher

Nicholl Cruz is a Lead Teacher at the University of Denver’s Fisher Early Learning Center, where she works with preschool children ages three to four in the Laughing Butterflies classroom. With over 25 years of experience in early childhood education, Nicholl is passionate about creating vibrant, child-centered learning environments that encourage creativity, curiosity, and meaningful relationships. Her teaching philosophy centers on honoring children as capable learners by integrating art, exploration, and inquiry-based experiences that support both social-emotional growth and academic development.

Nicholl is currently completing her master’s in communication and leadership at the University of Denver, where she focuses on emotional intelligence and leadership in education. Outside the classroom, Nicholl loves art, movement, and bringing joy and imagination into her teaching—fun fact: she once stepped out of her comfort zone and performed stand-up comedy, proving that a little courage and a lot of laughter go a long way.

Jax Von Adler, Associate Teacher

Originally from Connecticut, Jax moved out west 7 years ago and hasn’t looked back! He holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Fredonia and has spent the last 12 years dedicating his life to growing the next generation of young minds. He started out working with older students in music, theatre, and outdoor education before finding his calling with preschool.

When he’s not in the classroom, you can often find him making jewelry, rock hounding, hiking, or playing board games.

He is ecstatic to begin the next part of his journey at Fisher!

He believes that children deserve every opportunity to become the best versions of themselves and enjoys supporting and encouraging their growth. In his free time, Jeremy enjoys reading and is teaching himself several languages. He looks forward to meeting families and becoming part of the Fisher community.
