Engage, Act and Find Support
We are dedicated to making MCE a stronghold of social justice, which means we will continue to take action, reflect, take stock and return to action. Such is our social justice praxis.
Engage
For students seeking to engage other members of the MCE Community to provide peer-to-peer support, process current events or simply enjoy the camaraderie, we want you to know about these organized meet-ups and conversations that have been planned across the College. These include program/department specific groupings, student affinity groups and a special student-to-student only group organized by COESA.
Opportunities for Engagement
All Spring events have passed. Please be on the lookout for additional opportunities to engage within MCE.
Student and Affinity Groups
The following groups regularly host events that promote and facilitate engagement.
- Students-of-Color Affinity Group
- LGBTQIA+ Students Affinity Group
- Neurodiverse and Students with Disabilities Affinity Group

Act
For those who want to participate in one or more of the newly forming MCE DEI Council Task Forces, including a specific task force to address the support and success of BIPOC students, we want you to know about these ongoing action groups that are designing and implementing new reforms, practices and programs to help MCE better live its mission and continue creating an intentional culture that values diversity, equity and inclusivity as we battle against racial discrimination, inequality and dehumanization.
MCE DEI Council Task Forces (Students, Staff and Faculty)
The MCE Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council recently initiated four strategic task forces designed to review, develop, and implement programs and initiatives to support broader DEI priorities for the College. Students, staff and faculty are invited to contribute to these, as well as join the General DEI Council Meetings.
Our inaugural task forces include:
- Supporting the Success of BIPOC Students
- Recruitment and Retention of Staff and Faculty of Color
- DEI and MCE Transitions
- Deans’ DEI Advisory Group
Future (2021–2022) task forces in planning include:
- Trans*-inclusive teaching and learning
- Intersectionality across DEI
- MCE DEI Evaluation and Assessment
MCE Inclusive Excellence Committee (Staff and Faculty)
The Inclusive Excellence Committee (IEC) is dedicated to serving as facilitators to assist with knowledge acquisition, professional development and scaffolded personal growth. Consequently, we provide opportunities for faculty and staff to engage and take action in response to recent and ongoing events impacting historically marginalized and minoritized communities (e.g., the Chauvin trial, Wright shooting and anti-AAPI attacks).
IEC, with its focus on professional and personal growth, will offer a spring community service event for MCE personnel to support racially and ethnically minoritized (REM) communities. Additionally, we have upcoming opportunities for college-wide conversations related to the broader themes of anti-REM rhetoric (e.g., Lunch & Learn and affinity group meet-ups for staff and faculty of color).
IEC believes that community building is an intentional act. To get to the "what" (stronger communities), we must provide the "how" (activities). For the remainder of this and the upcoming year, IEC will continue offering events that support MCE faculty and staff, promoting their knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion. We aim to move toward more effective application and implementation of inclusive excellence initiatives.
