Ricks FAQ, February 2026

  • Why is Ricks closing?

After careful evaluation of long-term mission alignment and operational and financial sustainability, the University of Denver made the difficult decision to close Ricks following the 2026–2027 academic year.

This decision was made at the University level and is not a reflection of the quality of the program, the dedication of the faculty and staff, or the strength of the Ricks community.

  • When will Ricks close?

Ricks will operate fully through the 2026–2027 academic year. The school will close at the conclusion of that school year.

  • Why announce this in February 2026?

We are sharing this decision early to provide families and employees with more than a year to plan thoughtfully and make informed decisions ahead of the start of the 2027-2028 school year.

  • Will the 2026–2027 school year be appropriately staffed and stable?

Yes. The University and Ricks are committed to delivering a strong, stable, high-quality final year.

  • What support is available to help my family find another school for the 2027-2028 school year?

DU has engaged an independent educational consultant, Jennifer Rigsby of Front Range Educational Consulting, to support Ricks families during this transition.

She is available to meet with families to discuss school options, timelines, and planning considerations. Additional information about how to access the pre-paid support allocated to each family is available from the Ricks office.

  • How will tuition work for 2026–2027?

Tuition will continue to follow a monthly payment structure through FACTS.

Importantly, the contract for the 2026–2027 school year will allow you to withdraw your child with at least 30 days prior written notice to Ricks. If your child secures placement at another school before or during the school year, you will only be responsible for tuition and applicable fees due through the effective date of withdrawal.

  • Does this decision affect Fisher Early Learning Center?

No. This decision does not impact Fisher Early Learning Center. Additionally, Ricks will continue to operate the “Summer at Ricks” camp for Fisher students following the 2025-2026 school year.

  • Who should I contact with additional questions?

Families are encouraged to reach out to the Ricks office directly. For questions about school operations, please reach out to Ricks Director, Dr. Joi Lin. For questions about contracts and billing, please connect with Bernadette Howell or Amy Jacobs. We will also continue to host forums and provide updates as we move through this transition.

  • How are faculty and staff being supported during this transition?

We recognize that our faculty and staff are central to the Ricks experience and to your children’s success. The University is providing transition planning and support for the employees at Ricks.

Our goal is to promote stability in classrooms and continue to provide students with the high-quality instruction and care that define Ricks. We are committed to supporting our educators and staff with respect and transparency throughout this transition.
